Hayfever Treatments & Symptoms

Overview

Allergies are caused by allergens. Depending on the person they affect, an allergen can be almost anything from certain foods to animal dander. Hayfever is a fairly common allergic condition that occurs primarily around spring time. It is caused by allergens including pollen and dust. One of the best ways to treat allergies is to avoid known allergens however, this is not always possible and allergy symptoms occur.

Allergy symptoms include a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, watery, red or itchy eyes, an itchy throat and sometimes, a rash. Some people suffer from all of these symptoms at once while others may only experience one or two. Michael’s Health Care Chemist offers a range of products to treat the symptoms of allergies for the whole family.

It is important to note that individuals with severe allergies (known as anaphylaxis) should always carry an EpiPen and seek immediate medical attention if they are exposed to a triggering allergen.

Broad Symptoms

Many people experience a combination of symptoms when suffering from allergies. One of the most popular treatments for allergies is antihistamine tablets. These tablets contain ingredients that switch off the production of histamine (the substance the body produces when it comes into contact with an allergen). Antihistamines can be used to treat a broad range of allergy symptoms including a runny nose/nasal congestion, itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, an itchy throat or rashes and are the general ‘go to’ treatment for many people.

Blocked or Runny Nose

Nasal congestion is often present during an allergic reaction (especially hayfever) and can be treated directly with nasal decongestant products such as nasal sprays and washes. It is caused by irritation and inflammation of the sinuses.

Sneezing

Sneezing is a direct result of allergens irritating the membranes that line the inside of the nose. Products like nasal sprays and washes that reduce this inflammation and wash the allergens out of the sinus cavity can help to reduce the frequency of sneezing.

Watery, Red or Itchy Eyes

Histamine production in the body can sometimes cause watery, red or itchy eyes. Eye drops can be used to treat this symptom directly.

Itchy Throat

Histamine production may also cause irritation of the membranes lining the throat. Besides antihistamine tablets, sore throat lozenges that coat the throat and encourage salivation many provide a soothing effect.

Rash

Rashes caused by an allergic reaction are often referred to as hives. Hives can be treated indirectly with antihistamine tablets and directly with hydro-cortisone creams (in small areas) or creams that soothe the skin. Additionally, using soap free washes that reduce the irritation of the skin when compared to regular soap and keeping cool can help soothe hives. View our Therapeutic Skin Care range.
