It is the calcium form of D-glucaric acid, which breaks down in the stomach into D-glucaric acid and further breaks down in the intestines into D-glucaro-1,4-lactone. This lactone inhibits intestinal beta-glucuronidase produced by microflora. D-glucaric acid plays a role in liver conjugation.
