Hemidesmus has been used traditionally as a tonic, alterative, demulcent, diaphoretic, diuretic and blood purifier. It was employed in digestive disorders, syphilis, chronic rheumatism, urinary diseases and skin conditions. The herb has also been prescribed for male sexual impotence and low libido. In folk medicine, the plant has been described for use to induce a deeper sleep and to enhance dreaming.
