• Acetyl L-carnitine is the acetylated form of the amino acid L-carnitine
and occurs naturally in the body where it is synthesised in the brain,
liver and kidneys.
• The major difference between acetyl L-carnitine and carnitine is that
acetyl L-carnitine is more easily absorbed from the gut, and more
readily crosses the blood-brain barrier.
• The richest sources of carnitine are meat, poultry, fish and dairy
products, while grains, vegetables and fruits contain relatively small
amounts placing vegetarians at risk of primary deficiency.
• The L-isomer of carnitine is the biologically active form, whereas the
D-isomer may compete with L-carnitine for absorption and transport.
• Carnitine acts as an antioxidant in the cell membrane and protects
tissues from oxidative damage.
