• Sea buckthorn has a long history of medicinal use in Asia, India and Europe. In modern times, the oil of Sea buckthorn is popularly used cosmetically for skin and nutritionally in supplements for its ample source of health-promoting constituents. • Its genus name, Hippophae, originates from the Greek words, hippo, which means horse, and phasos, meaning to shine, due to the fact that its leaves and young branches were used as fodder for racehorses to improve the shininess of their coat1 . • Sea buckthorn oil is derived from the fruit or seed and is highly nutritional, enriched with unsaturated fatty acids such as omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid), omega-6 (linoleic acid), omega-7 (palmitoleic) and omega-9 (oleic acid) as well as vitamin E (tocotrienols and tocopherols), carotenoids (betacarotene, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin), plant sterols (campsterol and beta-sitosterol) and flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol), all of which work synergistically to exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects2 . • The bioactive constituent profiles of the fruit and seed oil vary considerably. The seed oil is particularly rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids whereas the fruit oil is predominantly high in carotenoids and omega-7, a rare fatty acid found in nature. DRUG INTERACTIONS • Caution with anti-coagulant and anti-platelet drugs such as aspirin and warfarin – Sea buckthorn may have an additive effect which can increase the risk of bleeding. • Caution with antihypertensive medication – Sea buckthorn may have an additive effect. Monitor blood pressure. CAUTIONS • Sea buckthorn may increase the risk of bleeding during and after surgery as it slows down blood clothing. It is recommended to discontinue its use 2 weeks before any scheduled surgery. • The safety of Sea buckthorn oil during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. SIDE EFFECTS • Very few side effects from Sea buckthorn have been reported. In rare cases, some individuals may experience gastrointestinal symptoms.

Adults and children over 12 years – For general health and wellbeing, skin health and antioxidant support: Take 1-2 capsules, twice daily, with food. To relieve dry eyes: Take 2 capsules, twice daily, with food. Or take as directed by your health professional.
