DRUG INTERACTIONS

• Take 2 hours away from other medications – Hormone Metabolism

can improve liver function and may affect how drugs are

metabolised (precautionary).

• Caution with cyclosporin – quercetin may decrease bioavailability of

drug (animal studies) or increase plasma levels and prolong the halflife (human study).

• Caution with digoxin – quercetin may increase drug bioavailability.

• Caution with hypoglycaemic medication - St Mary’s thistle may have

additive effects. Monitor.

• Caution with darunavir/ritonavir (antiviral agents) – a small

study found St Mary’s thistle may cause a small reduction in drug

concentrations in the blood. Monitor.

• Caution with metronidazole – St Mary’s thistle may moderately

reduce drug concentrations. Monitor.

• Caution with anticoagulant medication – Rosemary may inhibit

platelet aggregation and increase risk of bruising and bleeding.

• Caution with diltiazem (calcium channel blocker), paclitaxel

(antimetabolite) and pioglitazone (hypoglycaemic) – quercetin may

increase bioavailability. Use under professional supervision.

• Caution with quinolone antibiotics – quercetin may theoretically

compete with drug for absorption.

• Caution with midazolam (sedative) – quercetin may reduce efficacy.

• Caution with iron supplements - Rosemary may reduce iron

absorption and quercetin is an iron chelator. Seperate dose by

2 hours.

• Caution with oral contraceptives – Hormone Metabolism may

(theoretically) increase metabolism of oestrogen, affecting efficacy

and increasing the risk of pregnancy.

CAUTIONS

• Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• Caution in people with salicylate sensitivity – Rosemary contains

salicylates.

Adults only - Take 1-2 tablets, twice daily, with food, or as directed by your health professional.
