First Aid Supplies & Kits

Overview

Being prepared can help you save a life. That is why having an organised and properly stocked first aid kit can ensure you’re ready for a medical emergency. There are a number of materials which should form part of every first aid kit.

First Aid Kit Checklist

Every first aid kit should contain dressings in order to attend to a wound. A mixture of different types of dressings such as bandaids for minor wounds, standard roll dressings for larger wounds and water proof dressings are essential.

Tapes and bandages should also be on hand in order to hold dressings in place or to strap and secure an injury.

Antiseptic Creams and ointments should be included to clean wounds. These creams and ointments kill bacteria that cause infections. Often these products also contain a local anaesthetic to aid the healing process.

Pain relief should be on hand to help provided temporary relief to a person who has suffered an injury. Ideally, this pain relief would come in the form of paracetamol or ibuprofen tablets.

An eye wash or eye bath should be also be included in order to rinse eyes if they were to be the site of injury or discomfort.

An instant ice pack can be used to apply to injuries in order to reduce swelling. No freezer is required to cool the ice pack and they are generally disposable.

Other important products for a first aid kit include electrolyte tablets to treat dehydration, Alcohol gel for sanitising hands, nursers scissors for cutting dressings and tapes and splinter probes to treat and remove splinters.

Storing a First Aid Kit

Ensure that you keep your first aid kit in a safe, dry and accessible place, and make sure everyone knows where it is. First aid kits for cars, caravans or boats should be secured so they don’t become ‘projectiles’.
